A seminar on Labour law was organized by Jharkhand Bar Council in association withJamshedpur Bar Association on Saturday at Rajendra Vidyalaya auditorium. The chief guest of the programme was Supreme Court Judge, Justice S.J. Mukhopadhyaya.
Addressing the seminar, Justice Mukhopadhyaya stressed on the need to make labour laws more stringent. Justice Mukhopadhyaya said that out of 44 labour laws in the country, most of them have become obsolete and needed amendment in keeping with the changing times and needs. He said that no amendment had been made in the labour laws since the year 1952. The amendment proposals are pending in the Rajya Sabha.
He however said that caution should be exercised while making amendments so as to make sure that the interest of workers were not jeopardized.
The SC judge stressed the need for providing equal opportunity to women. He said women were still deprived of the opportunity to work at night. So, their interest must be protected equally.
Justice DN Patel, Jharkhand High Court judge highlighted the urgent need to bring equality among the workers. He said the workers should be provided benefits of the various government schemes in the country.
Jharkhand High Court Justice RR Prasad said that laws should be created keeping in view the prevalent social and economic conditions in the society. There are 84 million workers in India, but most of them are not aware of their rights. He underlined the need to make every person aware of labour laws and eliminate irrelevant laws.
