She went to the doctor with a complaint of stomach ache. When Sunita Devi(40)returned home, she had lost her uterus.
Devi is no strange case.Like her is Kavita Kumari(35).She alleged that when she sought diagnosis for stomach ache, the doctor told her to get her infected uterous removed.”I agreed. The operation was conducted and my uterus was taken out”,said Devi.
Investigations by a team of officials led by Palamau Deputy Commissioner Puja Singhal revealed that in Baraon village under Chainpur block in Palamau,as many as 50 women had lost their uterus. All of them were unfortunate victims of the doctors’ greed.
The modus operendi of these doctors was simple.Instead of treating them with medicines for stomach ache, they took to surgery. While using medicines to treat them fetched them sums varying between Rs 50 to Rs 100,surgery leading to removal of their uterus made them earn a sum varying between Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 per patient.
Apparently, this ghastly crime committed by the doctors was detected by a team of officials.”When we learnt that many women had lost their uterus,we turned suspicious. We launched survey to find out why they had undergone the operation”,Singhal told the mediapersons.
The report of the survey was not made public till date.Neither the identity of any one of these doctors was known. All doctors of the area have reportedly fled.(The names of the victims were changed to protect identity).
