Intelligence gathering system in the Maoists infested areas across the country has gained teeth with trained intelligence personnel of the Indian Army backing it,according to sources.
In the past, the Speacial Branch of the state police and the Intelligence Bureau of the Union Home Ministry were responsible for gathering the intelligence inputs.More often than not,the inputs gathered and supplied by them were not “specific.”
Now,they were being assisted by a trained Intelligence wing of the Indian Army, said highly placed sources in the government. The reform owes to P.Chidambaram,Union Finance Minister, who was incharge of the Home till recently.
In any case, the result is that since the inputs gained and supplied by them were credible and accurate, the security forces were successful in preventing violence, busting hideouts, arresting and recovering weapons.
For instance, the security forces recovered the US-made weapon,Colt M-16 in Hazaribagh on August 29 following the arrest of two Maoists there. This was considered a major success of the intelligence sleuths.
This was admitted today by Jharkhand DGP GS Rath in his press conference in Hazaribagh. He observed that the recovery “showed how strong the intelligence network had become in the state.”He revealed that the US –made weapon had come into the hands of the Maoists from Myanmar-where left extremists had been active for quite some time.
Though DGP Rath was categorical in his assertion that in the past too, foreign arms were seized from the left ultras in West Singhbhum,Palamau and Jamshedpur, two Maoists interrogated by a team of National Investigation Agency, were arrested with the US made weapon and a Rs four lakh worth bullet proof jacket, made in the United Kingdom, were recovered from their possession.
