The lynching of five men in Khunti on Saturday revealed that the villagers were fed up with an old menace-extortion.
Suraj Mahato (22), Pappu (20), Prem (20), Ram Naik (22) and Mahindra Lal Prasad (42) belonged to a gang in Khunti.Though they did not belong to any Naxalite outfit, their modus operendi was similar to them.
Like the Naxals, they were armed and had a close knit body led by Mahato, who had recently come out of jail on bail and maintained a list of contractors, corrupt officials and engineers and demanded extortion from them.
Any one who dared not to pay the ransom was either kidnapped or killed. In the recent past, they are alle ged to have committed a number of crimes related with ransom and murder. This had enraged the villagers.
On Saturday, when the villagers learnt that they had come to their village, they encircled them and beat them to death with sharp edged weapons and stones. The police had heaved a shy of relief and lodged the FIR against unnamed accused.”The bodies were post mortemed”,said Khunti SP Amarnath Mishra.
