Tribals are up in arms against the Roman Catholic Church in Ranchi, Jharkhand, projecting Mother Mary in red bordered saree.
Hundreds of non Christian Adivasis under the banners of Adivasi Jan Parishad,Adivasi Sarna Samiti,Adivasi Chatra Sangh and Kendriya Sarna Samiti took out a procession condemning it.
All of them marched through the main road in Ranchi shouting slogans and carrying a huge banner reading:’Videshi Mary Ko Lal Padh Ka Saree Pahnakar Adivasi Swaroop Dene Ke Khilaf”(Protest against projecting foreigner Mother Mary by making her wear red bordered saree to give an Adivasi look).
As the protesters marched,traffic on the main road and its adjoining lanes and by lanes were thrown out of gear for more than two hours.The school buses carrying students were starnded causing untold miseries to them.”It was terrible.We remained hungry”,cribbed Ashok Kumar,a Class IV student of DPS student.
