There is atleat one reason why this state should count its police records.Despite umpteen incidents of violence perpetrated by the Naxalites,it has been spared the blood shed caused by the terrorists in far flung areas of the country in Ahmadabad,Hyderabad,Bhopal,Kolkata,Mumbai and Delhi.
But,if police records are of any indication, four places in this state have served as hideouts to terrorists associated with SIMI and Indian Mujahideen during the past decade.
Consider facts first:
*January 28,2002:Two terrorists with ISI links-Mohammed Idris alias Wajid alias Zahid, son of Abdul Majid,a resident of Sakin Khannewal on Pakistan’s Multan province and Md Salom,a resident of Punjab, who were Pak nationals and were accused in the Kolkata American centre attack case, were killed by the police in an encounter in Kheergaon village in Hazaribagh.
*July 26,2007:Tracking Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid blast case on May 18,2007,the CBI had released the sketch of two suspected terrorists lonked with HuJI.The sketch was made on the basis of descriptions provided by Mohammed Shahid,a resident of Mihijam in Jamtara district bordering West Bengal. Both these terrorists were said to have bought for their cell phones SIM cards of the Hutch company from a shop near Mihijam.
*August 23,2010:On this date a group of armed men committed a heist and decamped with nearly 13 kgs of gold from a finance company in Bhopal at gun point.Anti Terroist Squad roun ded up Abu Faisal and recovered 6.2 kgs of gold from him.Faisal,a resident of Mumbai, who was allegedly linked to SIMI and Indian Mujahideen, was staying at a rented house at Zakirnagar in Jamshedpur.
*July 15,2011:The sleuths of national Investigation Agency had searched the house of a man in Ranchi in connection with a terror case of Mumbai. However,Manzar Alam,a graduate in Urdu from RanchiUniversity was not found.Alam who is neighbor and friend of Danish,a resident of Bariatu in Jharkhand’s capital, who was an accused in the Ahmedabad serial balst case of 2008,is still at large.
In addition,Kapali,a panchayat area in Chandil block of Saraikela –Kharsawan district,is suspected to have served as a hideout of the terrorists.”Though we have not been able to arrest any one from this place so far, interception of cell phone calls of some people from this village to the valley in J&K and Pakistan, indicated that it had served as a hide out of some terrorists. But before we swung into action, they escaped”,laments a senior police officer.
Kheergaon,Mihijam,Zakirnagar,Bariyatu and Kapali are densely populated localities that were virtually beyond the reach of the police of the
respective districts.Which is perhaps why the state police had submitted a proposal to the Union Home Ministry seeking to set up a separate “Anti Terrorist Squad” to deal with investigations into cases of terror and raise Commandos to deal with the terrorists.Said DGP GS Rath.”Our proposal is in line with our need.We hope we get the UHM’s nod soon”.
