Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren today addressed a group of tribal leaders during a meeting organised under the banner of ‘Jharkhand Tribal Consultative Council.’
The meeting held inside hotel BNR Chanakya in Ranchi, was convened by Soren to discuss and resolve issues connected with the tribal land.As per the law adopted by the British Government, the tribal land can not be sold to any tribal who was not the resident of the police station of the tribal owner.
Even the tribal land can not be sold to any non tribal.
This had far reaching consequences. The tribals could not use their land to draw benefits from the banks. Two,since poor tribals could not sell their land, the reach tribals and their institutions, who did not even belong to the same police station area, procured their land at throw away prices.
Soren, like many tribal leaders, who had benefited from the law and gained many plots of land in different parts of Jharkhand,is keen to reform the law and make the tribal owners-both the rich and the poor-benifit from it.
The Council’s meeting attended among others by Ministers such as Champai Soren, Geetashree Oraon and Lobin Hembrom was dealing with a similar objective.”We will hold other meetings and find out how the land law can be amended”,said Hembrom.
