Ruling coalition divided over Prez polls in Jharkhand

Jharkhand Stories

The ruling coalition led by chief minister Arjun Munda is sharply divided over the election of the President of India. While the BJP is set to support former Speaker PA Sangma, its ally All Jharkhand Students Union is going to back the Congress’s nominee Pranab Mukherjee.

During the past two days, both Sangma and Mukherjee arrived in Ranchi and garnered support for their own candidatures. Both met JMM supremo Shibu Soren too.

After the meet,Mukherjee sounded certain to gain the JMM’s support.Even Sangma claimed that the JMM had promised to support his candidature on the ground that he was a tribal leader.

But Soren’s son Hemant, who is Deputy CM,came out with a clarification today that his party gave no such assurance to Sangma.

Junior Soren who was calling the shots within the party offlate also made it clear that the JMM was not bound to back the candidature of the BJP backed Sangma.

This means that BJP’s two allies-AJSU and JMM-apart from JD(U),were inclined to support Mukherjee. This is certainly a bad news for Sangma in tribal Jharkhand!
