Rain may damage crops of vegetables,mangos,litchis

Unseasonal showers in Jharkhand over the last 24 hours lead to panic among farmers who fear vegetable,mango and litchi production may suffer this season.

Farmers in the Chotanagpur division that produces huge quantity of vegetables such as lady finger,beans,capsicum and tomato,in addition to some of the finest variety of litchi and mangos now have Mother Nature to contend with as well.

Through Saturday night and much of Sunday parts of Ranchi,Lohardaga,Gumla,Simdega and other areas witnessed intermittent rains leading to widespread panic among farmers.

Locals say any more rain could harm the vegetable  mango and litchi flowers and also attract thrips, insects, which spoil the fruit, turning them un-salable.

But those farmers who had sowed the wheat crop were happy.”This rain has brightened the prospect of wheat crop”,said a farmer.
