Jharkhand is in grip of the dreaded disease-AIDS,according to the National AIDS Control Organisation(NACO).
As per the NACO,there are 23,000 HIV positive people in the state. But NACO’s state unit Jharkhand AIDS Control Society had identified only 11,000 HIV positive patients till July 12.The search for others was reportedly on,said JACA.
A district wise analysis of these HIV positive patients showed that Ranchi topped the list with 3133 HIV positive patients hailing from this district.Chatra was at the bottom of the list with only eight HIV positive patients identified there.
According to JACA’s Director Birendra Prasad, migration of workers from Ranchi,Hazaribagh,Jamshedpur,Giridih,Dhanbad to far flung areas in Chandigarh,Chennai and Mumbai was a major cause of his number of HIV positive patients in these districts.”When the workers go to these places, they indulged in sex with prostitutes in these cities and get infected”,said a JACA’s officer.
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus.
This is the virus that causes AIDS. HIV is different from most other viruses because it attacks the immune system. The immune system gives our bodies the ability to fight infections. HIV finds and destroys a type of white blood cell (T cells or CD4 cells) that the immune system must have to fight disease.
