A new chapter was added in the field of Meteorology last night when India launched INSAT – 3D,a weather monitoring satellite with search and rescue capabilities.

The launch was facilitated by the tested Ariane-5 rocket in its 69th launch from the French space port at Kourou in French Guyana in South America. This space mission has cost India nearly Rs. 700 crores.

This satellite with capability to forecast early warnings about storms and cloud bursts carries equipments and devices to measure atmospheric humidity and temperature and will help forecast heavy rainfall events. It is argued that, had India launched it earlier, predicting the torrential rains that caused havoc in Uttarakhand in June would have been easier and accurate.
