The state government’s decision to increase the entitlement under Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act from 100 to 150 workdays has evoked a mix response in Jharkhand.
The state government’s move,a sequel to the Centre’s directive, was communicated to the Deputy Commissioners of all 24 districts in the state.A sum of Rs 1630 crore was allocated for MNREGA during 2012-13.
“The government has increased the man days keeping in mind the draught like situation in the state. We hope it will help the workers”,said Ashok Singh,Deputy Collector, who is responsible for implementation of MNREGA in Jharkhand.
Since the entitlement of work days was increased, more funds were expected to be spent under this scheme this fiscal year.”This will help us earn more”,said a MNREGA worker.
But his neighbour in Kanke block of Ranchi district Dukha Bhagat cribbed the government’s measure is of no use to them.”MNREGA is better known as MAREGA.Because many workers who had worked under the scheme had either suffered untold miseries to get paid for their wages or had died. Some had committed suicide.
This scheme was meant to fill the coffer of the corrupt officials. All those government staff, panchayat sevaks and contractors had joined hands. They maintained false records and robbed the treasury by using them. After I worked under the scheme last year, the payment was made this year.Eversince none of our family members dared to work under the scheme.”
