A Maoist ‘zonal commander’ was killed by villagers in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, the police said today.
He has been identified as Johnson Ganju and was a resident of Hazaribagh but had been operating in Saranda forest of the district for long, added the police.

Ganju allegedly went to meet his acquaintance in Rongo village late last night when the villagers, angry with his extortion and other misdeeds surrounded him and beat him to death, said the police.

The Maoist had tried to counter the attack by firing, which was returned by the villagers, the police said.
A country-made pistol, two live cartridges, one empty cartridge and three mobile phones were recovered from his possession, said the police.
