The fifth and last phase of poll in sixteen Assembly constituencies in Jharkhand on December 20 is crucial for the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.
In 2009, the JMM had won 10 out of these 16 Assembly seats leaving BJP, Congress, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha and Independent secure two, one, two and one seat respectively. This time, JMM’s Hemlal Murmu is contesting Barhait seat on BJP ticket against JMM leader and chief minister Hemant Soren who is also contesting on the party ticket from Dumka, represented by him in the Assembly since 2009.
To make the BJP secure more seats,Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed two election meetings-one at Dumka and second at Barhait. Its leaders were camping in these constituencies to mobilise votes in favour of the party. Also, many JMM supporters who were campaigning by carrying the party symbol-Bow and Arrow were getting popular support from among tribal electorates.
Aware of it, JMM president Shibu Soren and Hemant Soren were going door to door, apart from addressing election rallies in these constituencies.
Since many parts of Dumka and Pakur constituencies were considered Maoist infested. security forces were busy patrolling there.
