With the moon sighted last evening, the first day of Ramadan began today.

Market places in Ranchi and adjoining areas in Jharkhand were decked up with festoons and eatables such as sewaiya, khajur etc.

Ramadan marks the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar, the month that Allah first revealed the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.Lasting until Aug. 7, Muslims thank Allah for the opportunity to experience another month of fasting, worship and reward. In fact,Ramadan is a time when Muslims all over the world do not eat or drink between dawn and sunset. It is only after sunset that they consume eatables.

This period is considered to be a time of self-reflection, self-discipline and self-improvement, a time to increase good deeds and avoid anything that displeases Allah, a time for every Muslim to thank Allah for all the blessings He has given them and make ‘Dua’ for those that are not so fortunate.
