Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu today visited Delhi Public School,Ranchi, planted a tree, unveiled a statue of Lord Gautama Buddha and delivered speech on a conclave-‘Individual Social Responsibility’.

She spoke on the occasion of a conclave on a subject-‘Caring Jharkhand’-organised by the English Daily-The Telegraph.

While delivering her speech she said that she was happy to be a part of ‘Individual Social Responsibility’ conclave and pointed out that “the subject is vast and relevant a discussion on which is the need of the hour.”
“Further I begin with a quote from Winston Churchill-
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Her speech was as follows:

“Individual Social Responsibility is a moral belief where we as individuals, have a responsibility toward our society. Being Socially Responsible means that people and organisations must behave ethically and with sensitivity on social, cultural, economic and environmental issues. Striving for social responsibility helps individuals, organisations and governments have a positive impact on development at all levels.

By taking an active participation in resolving some of the issues, we as individuals should all strive to set good examples by applying and adhering to socially responsible practices, such as improving the quality of lives for individuals and their families, volunteer energy and time towards improving and benefiting our society.

“The individual social responsibility includes engagement of person towards the community where he lives, which can be expressed as an interest towards what’s happening in the community, as well as his active participation in solving the local problems.

Each community lives its own life that undergoes a process of development all the time. Everyone of us should take part in the developmental process at different levels; for example, by taking part in cleaning of the street in which he lives, organization of an event, by rendering social services to children without parents or helping the elderly people. Donating for a good cause is another way to discharge the responsibility, be it money, material, time or energy.

Teachers in a school/ college is imparting good education and training have to be honest to their profession. They may provide special attention to the comparatively weaker students by offering extra classes or giving more time to them.

They can also inspire and provide education to the children from the deprived section. Our former President Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had been the source of inspiration to the youth & children and had been their role model. He had visited this school as well and had interacted with the students.

For teachers too he had been a path maker and had been working in the field of education, especially among youth & children even after demitting the office of the President of India. We have lost a great scientist, educationist and reformer who had always thrived for a better educated India.

My dear students, you too can share knowledge with your colleagues & juniors which will improve your confidence as well. Apart from this you all can take steps to educate the children from weaker section of the society who are not undergoing a formal education in any of the regular school.

In fact you can motivate them to take up studies to get self reliant. You can take up the cleanliness drive in your locality and environmental issues by planting and adopting trees that will motivate others to adopt them for the betterment of the environment and the society at large. Your little efforts will inspire a great number of people surrounding you to take up the burning social issues.

Dear children, the first step I hope and expect you to take in discharge of your individual responsibility is to become self reliant. Help your parents, grandparents and neighbours. It will go a long way to improve your personality & confidence level.

I feel happy to mention that Mrs Nikita Sinha, Director of Montessori Learning School and Secretary, ‘NIMTT’ has shown a path to others by adopting Julia Minj by providing assistance to continue her higher education. It is an ideal case of Individual Social responsibility of a person towards the society and the needy ones among whom he or she lives in. In order to make Julia’s higher education uninterrupted Mrs Sinha with her colleagues has taken up the responsibility to facilitate her with the financial assistance. This is a laudable act of Mrs Sinha and her colleagues.

Despite financial constraint and hard living condition Julia had managed to bag 9th position in Intermediate Examinations in the state. She is an inspiration for others. This shows the brave girl’s conviction to gain education despite adverse conditions. I also appreciate the efforts of Shri N. N. Sinha, Principal Secretary, Rural Development Department for inspiring Nikita Sinha towards this great cause. I congratulate all others who had been associated with this initiative.

On this occasion, I would like to mention that taking the issue of Julia is just the beginning, more and more people should come forward to be a part of such initiative and under individual social responsibility take up courage to serve the society for its betterment. I also invite the management of this school to come forward to impart education to the children coming from socially and financial weaker section of the society. By doing so they will not only be known as the elite school of the town but will be lauded for its social commitment towards the nation, it will give a better message to the society. All media person must also participate to motivate people towards their individual social responsibility.

I hope in the time to come more and more such initiatives will be taken up by the individuals to fulfil one’s commitment towards the society under individual social responsibility. The pace of development will be more with mutual cooperation and commitment.

                                                           Jai Hind!     Jai Jharkhand!”
