The murder of Dr RB Choudhary(52) in Gumla on Monday has left the doctors numb and angry across Jharkhand.
As the doctors were mourning the crime, they criticised the state government and the police for their failure to save Choudhary.”It was mainly because none of the police or any state government officer made any effort to save his life”,said Dr SK Singh.
In fact,Choudhary was abducted from his private clinic in Gumla on April 30.The abductors had rung up his family members and demanded Rs 50 lakh as ransom to release him.Though his family members had informed the police about the ‘call and abductors’ demand, the police had failed to trace them.
“Due to sheer fear, some family members paid them Rs five lakh to kidnappers. This did not satisfy them”,cribbed a relative of late Dr Choudhary.
Sadly,Choudhary, who was posted at the Gumla District Hospital as Rural Child Health officer,is the third doctor to be murdered after the 28th state of Jharkhand was created in 2000.In protest against the murder, hundreds of doctors were up in arms. They had proceeded on strike.”We are in a state of terror”,said Dr RS Das.
Incidentally, since 2013,more than 350 government doctors had left government service citing poor security in extremist-affected areas.
On Monday, the police had recovered the body of Dr Choudhary from Kashitoli village in Gumla, around 120 km north of Ranchi.
