Jharkhand will remain shut tomorrow with a plethora of outfits, each consisting of members belonging to the Adivasi community, giving a call for the state wide bandh.

All schools, colleges, shops and market complexes are expected to down shutters.

The bandh was called by Akhil Bharatiye Sarna Dharmik Ayom Samajik Samanway Samiti,Adivasi Chatra Sangh,Adivasi Jan Parishad,Jharkhand Pradesh Budhijeevi Manch,Muttehada Muslim Samaj,All Muslim Youth Association,Jharkhand Dishom Party,Adivasi-Moolwasi Chatra Morcha,Adivasi Lohra Samaj,Raji Parha Sarna Prathna Sabha and CPI(ML-Liberation) to press the Hemant Soren government to adopt a ‘local’ policy for recruitment.

Most of these Adivasi outfits have long been demanding that those persons whose ancestors had their names mentioned in the Records of Rights prepared by the British government in 1932 be described as ‘local’ for the purpose of getting preferential treatment in getting government’s jobs. This was not acceptable to most non Adivasi outfits.

Among political parties, there was no unanimity on the issue. Some social activists who claimed to remain neutral say that Jharkhand should adopt the Chattisgarh model.

“In Jharkhand, the Adivasi constituted less than 28 percent of the total population. The same figure was more than 30 percent in Chattisgarh. Therefore, the best course could be to adopt Chattisgarh model”,said Avinash Murmu,a school teacher.

To make their bandh successful,a group of activists took out a torch light procession in Ranchi this evening. The protagonists of the bandh shouted anti Hemant Soren government slogans.
