*Twelve-year-old Sukro of Sadula village in Khunti district was taken to New Delhi with a promise of a play ground with swings and plenty of sweets.
Sukro was among 19 children who fell to the human traffickers. They took them to Delhi, Haryana, Gurgaon and other North Indian states to work there as domestic helps. But all of them were rescued by the state government, according to Jharkhand Social Welfare Minister Bimla Pradhan.
Takling to the media in Ranchi on Friday,Pradhan said:“Not only we rescued them but also we approached a court in Delhi. Finally, the court ordered six families who had engaged six girls as domestic help.Rs 4.79 lakh was disbursed among them by way of fixed deposits,” she added.
“All the girls reached Ranchi by Garib Rath yesterday. We will get the girls admitted in a school,” she said.Coming down heavily on human traffickers, Pradhan rued at the traffickers who were being helped by relatives of the victims.
“In the hope of getting money, the relatives are handing over the little girls in the hands of human traffickers…they are also being sexually exploited, besides being labour-oriented exploitation ” lamented the minister.“Action will be taken against the guilty,” she said.
The State Coordinator of the ASTEC, Sanjay Mishra, who was also present at the minister’s office, said, it was for the first time that any court had slapped fines on the offenders and got them to pay wages and compensation to the victims.
“The girls are now staying at Kishori Niketan,Bijupara. After counseling and need-based assessment, they will be provided with legal aid,” Mishra said. “Thereafter they will be rehabilitated.”
Sharing their plight before the media, a girl said she used to work from dawn to dusk with little freedom to go out.“The house where I was working as a domestic help did not even feed me well,” said one of the girls, who was all cheers before the minister following her freedom.
