11 killed in Jharkhand temple stampede

Eleven people died and more than 50 were injured in a stampede near Lord Shiva temple in Deoghar district of Jharkhand.

The incident took place near a Durga temple at Belabagan More on Deogarh-Jassidih road early in the morning when the devotees tried to break the queue and ran towards the temple. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed grief and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

According to eyewitnesses, stampede broke out after police resorted to lathi charge to manage the crowd.

Home Secretary N.N. Pandey, Additional Director General of Police S.N. Pradhan and other senior officials are supervising the rescue operation, the official statement said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief at the loss of lives.
