1.43 lakh houses built under Indira Awas Yojna in Jharkhand

The Government of India has constructed 1.43 lakh houses in the state of Jharkhand under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) in last 4 years since 2012-13. In state of Jharkhand, 64,569 housing units were built in 2012-13, 46,651 in 2013-14, 30,681 in 2014-15 and 1130 housing units have been built in the current financial year 2015-16. Sudarshan Bhagat, minister of state for rural development informed Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2015, in reply to a question from Parimal Nathwani.

Nathwani wanted to know whether BPL families in rural areas are provided any financial assistance for construction of houses and how many housing units have been constructed in last four years. He also wanted to know whether the government proposes to provide free houses for SCs/STs in the country.

The Minister stated that Indira Awas Yojana is an ongoing allocation based scheme and is implemented by the States and union territories (UTs). Under the scheme assistance is provided to the rural BPL families for construction of houses, said the Minister. He said that the rate of assistance is Rs.70,000 rupees, while in North East States and difficult areas the assistance is Rs.75,000 per unit.

The Minister stated that total 56,02,447 housing units have been built under IAY in last three years and the current year. According to the statement tabled in the house, assistance is also provided for homestead plots at rate of Rs. 20,000 per unit, which is to be shared ratio of 50:50 between Centre and States. He said that assistance for upgradation of kutcha houses at rate of Rs.15,000 per unit is also a component of the scheme.

The minister stated that the government does not propose to provide free houses for SCs/STs. Indira Awas Yojana is a allocation-based scheme depending on the allocation made in the budget houses of sanction to the beneficiaries, said the minister.
