Rains continued to cause death and destruction in Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas in Kharsawan-Saraikela in Jharkhand.
At Somai Jhopri area located along the area traversed by two rives-Suvarnarekha and Kharkai-that were on spate due to incessant rains since Monday,a mud house collapsed and two children were buried alive under its debris on Wednesday.
These children – Santoshi(7) and Ansu(5)were killed while three other family members including her mother and grandmother were injured when their mud house caved in last night when they were reportedly asleep.
The Met office said Jamshedpur received 60.3 mm rainfall since yesterday while 42.6 mm rainfall was recorded a day before. The river Kharkhai was flowing over five meter at 134.080 m against danger level of 129 m while Swarnarekha was flowing at 123.10 m against the red mark 121.50 m.
Four sluice gates in Orrisa adjoining Mayurbhanj district were opened last night which led the water level shoot up in these rivers ,causing inundaton affecting scores of families in Shastrinagar, Bagbera, Daiguttu, Mango in East Singhbhum and Adityapur and Rajnagar in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan.
The state government has alerted the state administration to carry out relief and rescue operation there.Today,a team of officials led by Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum Amitabh Kaushal visited the affected places.But the relief operation worth its name was yet to begin.
