Rains bring cheers among farmers,turn Suvarnarekha ,Kharkai rivers cross danger mark

Rains during the past three days have brought cheers among the farmers in Jharkhand.

“Now,we wont starve”,said giggles Mahto,a farmer of Ratu block in Ranchi district,echoing the sentiments of many farmers in Ranchi and its adjoining areas in Jharkhand.

This belt,lacking in rains since June which had created drought like situation prompting the state government to sanction Rs 14 crore to purchase seeds for distribution among the affected farmers to facilitate them undertake cultivation of alternative crops,had received more than 60 ml of rains during the past three days.

Though this had not added up to the normal rains received by it during the same period in the past five years(2008-13),it had created a flood like situation on the banks of Suvarnarekha and Kharkhai rivers in Jamshedpur and Kharsawan-Saraikela districts.

Today,reports said that more than 200 families living in low-lying areas,located on the banks of these rivers were inundated as both rivers Suvarnarekha and Kharkhai were flowing above the danger mark.

“The situation aggravated after four sluice gates in adjoining Orissa’s Mayurbhanj district, and one on Khakhari river in Seraikela-Kharswan were opened on Tuesday night”,said ,reports.
